Hou Jin, a director in the Auxiliary Ministry of War memorialized: "The rebellious Lu-chuan bandit Si Ren-fa ordered 12 of his bandit leaders, including Dao Ling-dao, over 30,000 bandit followers and 80 elephants to proceed to Da-hou Subprefecture. He intended for them to proceed to Jing-dong, Wei-yuan and other areas to engage in attacks and plunder. Together with the Commissioners Ma Rang and Lu Yue, I led the government troops in opposing them. Firearms (銃) and arrows were fired together and, in a short time, the bandit forces were greatly defeated. There were 352 heads taken and we captured the bandits' tents, flags, drums, firearms (銃砲), helmets, armour and other goods." The Emperor conferred Imperial orders of reward and instruction upon them, saying: "You have fought loyally and bravely and demonstrated the might of the army. I am very pleased with this. Your promotions and rewards will be arranged when this affair has been concluded."
